The initiative enhanced the accessibility of Intel's GitHub repositories, making them more usable for developers with disabilities. Another goal was to position Intel as a leader in inclusivity within the tech community, setting new benchmarks in accessibility. This was one of Intel's commitment to the GLAAD pledge
Developers with disabilities face significant barriers that hinder their full participation in software development, often due to essential resources like README files in GitHub repositories lacking accessibility features. This initiative aims to make internal repositories accessible to all developers, not just to meet compliance standards but to set an example in creating a more inclusive development environment.
The cornerstone of the initiative is the development of a scanning tool to analyze README files across GitHub repositories. This tool will identify accessibility issues, generate detailed reports, and provide support with proposed fixes and guidelines. Additionally, the team plans to use these insights for collaboration, share periodic reports with repository owners, and provide the accessibility scanner as a GitHub Action to integrate into the development lifecycle.
